The Stayography Method

Evidence before explanation.

We document the experience in sequence, test what can responsibly be tested, separate direct observation from inference, and make recommendations in proportion to the evidence.

From promise to priority.

Traditional checklist-led mystery shopping often asks whether defined standards were followed. Stayography asks a different question: does the complete stay work for the guest, where does it break down, and what is leadership most justified in doing about it?

01
Promise Capture

Document the expectations created by the website, OTA listings, policies, imagery, booking path, and pre-arrival communication.

SOURCE / PRE-ARRIVAL
02
Review Patterns

Identify recurring praise, tension, and unresolved concerns in recent public feedback. Patterns become questions for fieldwork—not presumed facts.

PATTERN / QUESTION SET
03
Journey Observation

Move through the stay as a normal guest, recording the sequence, timing, dependencies, and moments of avoidable uncertainty.

FIELD / DIRECT OBSERVATION
04
Overnight Testing

Test the realities a daytime walkthrough can miss: after-hours access, sleep conditions, instructions, stated amenity timing, and unattended transitions.

FIELD / BOUNDED TEST
05
Incident Classification

Separate isolated friction, material failure, effective recovery, distinctive strength, and signals that require more evidence.

EVIDENCE / CLASSIFICATION
06
Cause Mapping

Trace an observed consequence toward plausible operational causes. Hypotheses are labeled as hypotheses and turned into management questions where internal verification is needed.

INFERENCE / VERIFY INTERNALLY
07
Action Priority

Rank recommendations by guest impact, operational exposure, recurrence risk, and implementation effort so the report tells leadership what deserves attention first.

OUTPUT / MANAGEMENT DECISION

Evidence discipline

Strong enough to be useful. Careful enough to be fair.

A field observation can prove what happened in the field window. It cannot, by itself, prove how often it happens. Stayography keeps that boundary visible.

Direct observationWhat happened in the field window.

Something seen, heard, received, timed, or experienced during the stay.

Validation testWhat can be reproduced responsibly.

A controlled repeat of a bounded action to test whether a sequence works consistently.

InferenceWhat may explain the consequence.

A plausible operational cause, framed for leadership to verify rather than presented as established fact.

DecisionWhat the evidence justifies doing next.

A proportionate action, preservation choice, or further test tied directly to the observed guest consequence.

Scope note

Clear boundaries make the findings more credible.

The Overnight Guest Journey Diagnostic is intentionally narrow: a private, evidence-linked reconstruction of the guest experience and a decision tool for leadership.

THE DIAGNOSTIC DOES
  • Observe the stay as an ordinary guest.
  • Separate observation, validation, and inference.
  • Document strengths as well as friction.
  • Prioritize management decisions.
THE DIAGNOSTIC DOES NOT
  • Issue a public rating, certification, or award.
  • Operate as a covert employee “gotcha.”
  • Claim statistical representation from one stay.
  • Replace specialist compliance, safety, legal, engineering, accessibility, cybersecurity, financial, or food-safety audits.

A better outside view

Put guest feedback in context.

See where promise and delivery diverge, where the journey depends on unwritten knowledge, and which strengths should survive any fix.
